Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) What if some of the extensions fall out before it is time to reapply?
A) Shedding is a natural process for oil people. On average a client sheds 40-100 natural strands of hair daily.
If half of your client’s hair is locked into a bead with an extension, they will still shed their natural hair. This is a normal process and can be scary for a client to see when you remove the extensions.
Reassure your client that they loose hair daily and this is a normal process.
It is also normal for a client to loose up to 10% of their hair extensions within the first month. Let them know rhe amount they may loose so they are not rushing into the salon in a panic. Example: if you apply 100 fusion bond extensions, you client may loose up to 10 strands over the next month. This goes the same with tapes, nano beads and micro beads.  Advise your client to save these and bring them to their next appointment.

2) What causes the hair extensions to shed prematurely?
A) Slippage is 50% of the reason why extensions can occasionally be unsuccessful. An oily scalp adding oil onto the hair near or around the bond, or using too much conditioner near the bond are the main reasons why slippages may happen.
Be sure to analyse your clients scalp and hair before the service. Clarifying the hair prior to the application and keeping hair oil free will help extensions have long lasting results.
If the client has a naturally oily scalp that cannot be controlled with dry shampoo, it may be best to not preform this service,

3) Can anyone notice your client wearing extensions?
A)If the extensions are applied properly. They should be virtually undetectable for by anyone.

4) Are hair extensions painful?
A) There should never be any pain or discomfort associated with having hair extensions. They may be some scalp tenderness for the first few nights of sleeping on your extensions.

5) Can hair extensions be coloured?
A) Yes, Remy hair can be darkened with oxidative colours. Although, Remy hair is human with the cuticle infact it has been chemically treated as part of the manufacturing process. To keep integrity of your Remy hair. It is advised to use a demi-colour in your colouring process. If you are customizing or colouring the hair extensions to match your clients hair, choose an extension slightly lighter than the desired shade and deepen it. It is not available to lighten, highlight or perm.
Virgin Remy hair has never previously had chemical procedures. You may colour, lighten and perm this hair.

6) Can hair extensions be cut?
A) Yes, but it takes a special skill when cutting or blending someone’s extensions. Someone who is not specifically trained to cut or blend extensions should never attempt to do so.

7) If the natural hair is damaged is, are they still an okay candidate for extensions?
A) Yes, in some cases clients experience healthier hair and new growth because they are wearing extensions and not over processing their hair.

8) Who is a good candidate for hair extensions?

9) Will hair extensions ruin the natural hair?
A) As long as hair extensions are applied properly and your client follows proper at home hair care guidelines, there should be no damage to the natural hair.

10) How should I advise my client to take care of their hair extensions?
At home care will include the following guidelines:
- Sleep with your hair in a loose braid (preferred) or ponytail.
- Use a soft nylon, boar bristle or loop brush that is safe for hair extensions brush your hair everyday from roots through ends.
- Wash your hair extensions carefully using a sulphate free shampoo. Never tip your head or hair upside down to shampoo. Condition your mid shaft and ends, keeping the conditioner away from the bonded area. Gently squeeze with a towel to remove excess water. Never vigorously rub your hair with a towel.
- Detangle extensions by holding the root (extension bond area) of your hair and detangling with a large tooth comb. You may also use a leave-in conditioning spray on your extensions.
- Clients may use hair styling products; however, it is incredibly important to keep any silicones and oils away from the bonds. This includes natural oils from infrequent shampooing. If your client’s hair and scalp get oily between shampooing advise them to use dry shampoo in between washing.
- To keep your extensions in great shape, let them dry as often as possible: if you choose to use a blow dryer use it on a low setting. Do not flip your head over to dry. Keep your head up right and concentrate the airflow downward, in the direction of the cuticle.
- Be careful near the bonded area when using hot tools including blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons. Never clamp a hot tool directly on the bond.
- If you choose to swim wearing your extensions, spray your hair with leave in conditioner and then braid before swimming. Then shampoo and condition hair immediately after leaving the pool.
- Be careful not to pull your hair with aggressive brushing, shampooing or styling your hair. Do not place hair in tight ponytail, braid or bun.
Lastly, make sure that your clients are having the hair removed and replaced when appropriate.  (4 to 12 weeks depending on which application method).

11) Why are sulphates bad for hair extensions?
A) You’ve probably heard it over and over: only use sulphate-free shampoo. This is because that lather that forms when you shampoo comes from sulphates contained in the shampoo. Those sulphates help to clean your scalp and hair of oils and build up.
The problem is your new hair extensions do not produce oil.
Sulphates will dry out new extensions and strip them of their colour.
